There are songs that stand upright and others that are made to fall. This trio born between Strasbourg and Ankara moves through these shifts without a manual. Thinking about it, their aesthetic has navigated somewhere between Sub Pop flashes and 4AD mirages from the start. We first heard them overflowing, between shoegaze and noise rock (Heartbeat, 2012, To The Grave To The Rave, 2013). Vow (2016) tightens the lines with a drier, more intense live record. In 2020, F.A. Cult, produced by Charles Rowell (Crocodiles), marks a turning point: the pop asserts itself, the air circulates more, but the tension remains. Today, we recognize their way of holding a motif to the point of obsession while everything shifts around it. Zeynep Kaya’s voice envelops and carries, stretching out or tightening up as the tracks unfold. Delphine Padilla gives the drums a motoric feel where every hit seems choreographed. Atef Aouadhi sets guitars and basses in dialogue, clear or incisive, opening up space and guiding the songs. The synths appear or recede to unsettle or illuminate the melodies. Vagabond Melodies extends this trajectory. More direct, more grounded, Hermetic Delight’s second album refines a language that is now singular. The art of persistence.
