Schubert Symphony No. 7 "unfinished" & Franz Schuberts Begräbniss-Feyer

Description

Globally known, the oboist, conductor, and Swiss composer Heinz Holliger continues his recordings of the complete cycle of symphonies by Franz Schubert with the Kammerorchester Basel. This disc also includes other instrumental works such as overtures, dances, or vocal works transcribed for orchestra. Holliger designed this fifth disc of the Schubert cycle with the Basel Chamber Orchestra as a portrait of the composer through 16 years of compositions. The album opens with an Andante taken from a symphony that Schubert began composing only a few days before his death. It is followed by the "Unfinished" Symphony, written in the autumn of 1822 at the age of 25 and confronted with the symptoms of syphilis that would kill him a few years later. The album also contains "Franz Schuberts Begräbniß-Feyer," the funeral march that Schubert composed for his own burial. The album concludes with the posthumous Six German Dances, discovered in 1931, more than a century after Schubert's death, and arranged for orchestra by Anton Webern.
