In his Fan of French Music, the Swiss oboist and composer Heinz Holliger explores a vast selection of French works for oboe and piano in a multi-chrome program of early 20th-century music. This very varied recital brings together compositions by Ravel, Debussy, Milhaud, Saint-Saëns, Casadesus as well as Koechlin, Jolivet, and Messiaen - Holliger has maintained a personal relationship with several of these composers.
On piano, we find Anton Kernjak, who participated in the recording of Holliger's 'Aschenmusik' in 2014, while the French harpist Alice Belugou comes to play on 'Controversia' for oboe and harp by André Jolivet. The richness of the 20th-century oboe repertoire is highlighted throughout the album and engages Holliger in stimulating dialogues with the piano and harp. 'Fan' follows the release of 'Lunea', Heinz Holliger's multiple award-winning opera in 2022.
As Holliger states in his booklet note, "the proximity of the oboe to the human voice inspired me to open the richly colored fan of French music through the still too little-known series of Vocalises-Études."
