The recruitment of keyboardist and second vocalist Cathy Rogers adds a new dimension to Heavenly’s wispy pop on their debut album, *Heavenly Vs. Satan*. A long way from the ramshackle aesthetic of Talulah Gosh’s early days, tracks like the early single “Starshy” and shimmering “Different Day” are tight and direct, and despite their simplicity, they pack a real punch. A licensing deal with US indie K Records also proves remarkably fortuitous — not only does it help bring Heavenly’s music to a wider audience, but it also allows Calvin Johnson to lend his sepulchral vocals to “C Is the Heavenly Option,” an utterly charming duet with Amelia Fletcher that is the album’s centerpiece.
