While Nilsson was gaining recognition in the early 1970s, Randy Newman was practically unknown outside of the music publishing world and almost non-existent as a performer. This artistic peak is all the more poignant as both artists eventually garnered critical acclaim (rightly so). Famous for its "Record of the Year" award from Stereo Review magazine, Harry Nilsson's album *Nilsson Sings Newman* stands well outside the mainstream of other records from that period – Newman's piano being the sole accompaniment to Nilsson's army of multi-tracked harmonies and overdubs. It is also the first album where Nilsson was his own producer. Part of the album's charm can be heard in the studio feedback Nilsson chose to include between his vocal harmonies to help achieve the final product. Fan favorites include "Vine St.," "Love Story," and "Living Without You," which are breathtaking from start to finish.
