Hamerkop is a duo based in Baltimore made up of music enthusiasts: Annabel Alpers, composer, singer, and instrumentalist, known as Bachelorette in New Zealand, and Adam Cooke, drummer and sound engineer from Baltimore who has worked with Beach House, Wye Oak, and Future Islands. Together, they have created a series of songs that confront the world of often mundane (but ultimately often satisfying) daily life with the world of an idealized and desired fantasy, in order to find the space between the two where we feel at ease. Hamerkop's debut album, Remote, was born as an exploration of sonic beauty through a collection of sound recordings made by Annabel in her homeland and during her travels around the world. Looping and sampling, they became a fully-fledged instrumental ensemble, and when played live through speakers with a surround sound experience, their effect was transcendent. The album blends these expansive sounds with layers of synths and vocals, featuring a kaleidoscopic, almost psychedelic quality, all anchored by Cooke's kraut-minimal drumming. The songs on Remote find their depth in the rich mosaic of voices, sounds, and classic pop melodies. In a bold yet familiar genre, Hamerkop translates topography into a musical language that celebrates our shared spaces. Hamerkop's sound is multilayered, constantly in motion. It was developed by two people but truly belongs to all of us.
