Warmer Than Gold

Description

Warmer Than Gold, the new album from Ben Cook’s GUV project, is a testament to a life dedicated to music. Both a critical and celebratory travelogue, it seeks to transcend the uniformity and status-obsession of our times with powerful beats, catchy choruses, and layers of distortion. Conceived on the fly, the album sounds at home everywhere, while expanding Cook’s sonic palette and exploring new rhythms inspired by breakbeats. Hailing from a background split between Toronto and England, Cook brings a singular perspective, nurtured by influences ranging from Oasis to Neil Young, as well as hardcore and punk with No Warning and Fucked Up. His solo work, first as Young Governor, then Young Guv, and now GUV, demonstrates constant evolution and a taste for genre fusion. Warmer Than Gold brings these experiences together in an album that is both broad and precise. The choruses remain incisive, inherited from Cook's previous releases, but are accompanied by a renewed production, influenced by Madchester, Britpop, the Beastie Boys, and Primal Scream. The tracks explore cultural globalization, the passage of time, and the artist's place in this world, while retaining the propulsive energy and pop momentum that characterize GUV.
