Released in September 2021, Death & Transfiguration is the debut album by Gus Englehorn, a former international snowboarding star turned audacious musician. Just as Gus Englehorn approached snowboarding with creativity and eccentricity, he thankfully takes the same uncompromising approach to his music. Far from redundant and tiresome current trends, this debut album evokes both 60s garage rock and 90s lo-fi. While the irresistible pop melodies can be likened to The Kinks, the amused and fast-paced vocals sometimes resemble those of Daniel Johnston. Unsurprisingly, Gus Englehorn's music also recalls 90s indie rock, a musical style often found in the soundtracks of skateboard and snowboard videos. With Death & Transfiguration, Gus Englehorn offers a breath of fresh air with heavy guitars, catchy melodies, and strangely intriguing subjects.
