The instrumental formation of Guiding Light had already prepared a first series of tracks when it called on Elise Cook for the vocals; by miracle, she already had lyrics ready. This providential meeting gave birth to their first EP - eleven minutes and fifty seconds of feverish energy that defined their post-punk sound in the eyes of curious music lovers. Now, Cook's melodies are born in the same room as the crystalline and precise sounds of John Morales' guitar, Rachel Kirk's incisive bass, and Charles Powell's impactful drums. The result is titled 'Fear On My Own Time', a new album by a band that masters its art and continues to progress. It's hard to guess that the recording took place over two sessions spaced six months apart, as the work exudes a sense of urgency: if anger sparks action, energy becomes the reaction. The narrative scope of 'Fear On My Own Time' expands as reflections on a breakup lead to revelations about human connections. The critical introspection draws from ego, confusion, and unvarnished honesty, but a much broader issue lies at the root of these pains. The last two tracks culminate in a rallying cry against fascism and highlight how, after being mistreated, our inability to show vulnerability ultimately drives us apart. No need to speak German, Guiding Light's preferred language, to understand this message; the album also contains their first lyrics translated into English: "In the cage, it is only together that we will find the key." If we all danced to the music of Guiding Light, the world would be a better place.
