Geidi Primes

Description

Vinyl reissue of the debut album by Montreal singer Grimes (aka Claire Boucher): Nurtured by the web and new technologies, this young woman with a decidedly emo style is a little elf who seems to have just stepped out of another dimension with her eccentric hairstyles and pink, yellow, green, purple, or blue hair. From childhood, she was passionate about the Middle Ages, the supernatural, and alternative music: New Age, particularly with Enya, Asian music like J-rock, medieval music, punk, industrial, gothic, and then, a little later, trip-hop, electronic music, but also 90s pop and R&B. From all these influences, this hybrid artist forged her own musical style, an experimental, inimitable genre that would oscillate between dark wave and dream pop if one absolutely had to "categorize" it, but Grimes herself doesn't seem to be able (or willing?) to define her style, which she simply describes as "modern." In 2010, Grimes recorded her very first album, titled *Geidi Primes*, on cassette in her Montreal bedroom, produced by Arbutus Records. This album is inspired by *Dune*, Frank Herbert's novel, which is one of the singer's favorite books. The title is, with one inversion and one letter difference, the name of one of the planets found in the *Dune* universe, Giedi Prime. The various track titles on the album are either the names of other planets or references to characters from this science fiction novel series. Grimes had made the entire album available for free download on the web, and, for the record, she never imagined it would achieve so much success; she even thought no one would listen to it... Ultimately, *Geidi Primes* was very well received by critics, who saw it as a trippy, eccentric, tribal album blending sounds ranging from dubstep to disco.
