Extra Stars is the first solo album by Gregory Uhlmann on International Anthem. It is a deep and sumptuous exploration of the rhythmic ambient universe of this Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist producer/composer, already sketched out within his highly acclaimed duo with Meg Duffy, his trio with Josh Johnson and Sam Wilkes, and the softer atmosphere of SML (the improvised trance-jazz group of which he is a member).Like a sidereal and radial serenade, the album's fourteen infinite miniatures blend unexpected syntheses and measured melodies to create a lush sonic panorama. For a record that rarely incorporates instrumental percussion, the music is resolutely rhythmic, while Uhlmann also explores vast expanses of pastoral beauty. Particular care has evidently been given to harmonic depth, often absent from purely atmospheric ambient music, thus offering a delightfully refreshing reinterpretation of electronic and muted sounds.
