LE PIANISTE GRÉGORY PRIVAT CONTINUES HIS ASCENT IN THE COURT OF THE GREATS. Nominated for the 2015 Victoires du Jazz in the "Jazz Revelation" category, Grégory Privat continues his ascent in the court of the greats. The Martinican pianist, after his notable duo with Sonny Troupé and his participation in Lars Danielsson's group, releases his first trio album with ACT featuring Linley Marthe on double bass and Tilo Bertholo on drums. Let's allow Grégory to present his new project: The concept is the story of this trio, there are very strong bonds that we share, both humanly and musically. Now, the title of the album "Family Tree" refers to an inspiration from my family tree, and the story of my ancestors, whether they are African, European, Indian, or Chinese. This reflection led me to later realize the contribution of all these cultures, as different as they may be, in the process of creating what we now call Creole culture. It is primarily a "jazz album." Only compositions. Now, and as often in my albums, there are big nods to Creole rhythms, such as bèlè, Haitian rara, or even more popular styles like Zouk and Dance Hall. Tilo is a true enigma. Despite his young age, he is now, for me, part of the new forces of drumming today. He has simultaneously assimilated all the techniques of modern playing found in great American drummers, but above all, he manages to make the Antillean tradition exist and be revisited in his approach to drumming. He is already a great Musician! Linley is the second enigma of this album. I had already found the drummer of the album in Tilo, and for more than a year I was searching for a double bassist. I needed someone who could have the sound, and also be comfortable in both Jazz and Creole rhythms. I had a revelation with Linley. I knew he had already collaborated on double bass on one or two albums about ten years ago, but what I didn't know is that he has a deep love for this instrument. Linley is a true musician, whatever the instrument, he will make the Music exist. (excerpts from an interview for "Bananier Bleu - Afro-Caribbean jazz music").
