It is already difficult to describe what Deerhoof sounds like. So let's skip that step and say that this record sounds a lot like Deerhoof with a different singer. The melodies soar, the big hits abound, the harmonies are complex, and the tonalities change frequently and unexpectedly. Greg plays everything, except for a few birds that join in the singing from time to time. He significantly limits the instrumentation, and the sound is disjointed. The songwriting is beautiful and sophisticated, and the drums are almost an afterthought. Mozartian chords and sounds sneak in here and there throughout the album, ultimately taking over in a grand climax at the end, when the drums unexpectedly stop to give way to an orchestral surge that, ironically, may be the rawest part of a very raw album.
