At its core, the music of Grandbrothers represents a communion between the old and the new. On their extraordinary new album, "Late Reflections," set to be released on April 14 via City Slang, the German-Swiss duo places their art in communion with an institution so ancient that it predates their music by seven centuries: the Cologne Cathedral. The iconic monument of Gothic architecture, which is both a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most visited site in Germany, served as an unorthodox recording studio for Grandbrothers' fourth album, marking the only time the cathedral has allowed such a recording. The resulting album is imbued with a rare sense of history and architecture, allowing the spatial properties of this magnificent edifice to shape and deepen the timbre of the duo's compositions. The cathedral's setting subtly guided the duo towards more ambient and atmospheric instincts. "On our previous album, we had taken a more physical and club-influenced direction," explains Sarp. "On this album, we simply said, 'Let's see what happens and be free to go further into ambient, atmospheric, or even experimental soundscapes.'"
