Le Freiburger Barockorchester, conducted from his violin by Gottfried von der Goltz, delivers a brand new recording of the very rare Passion Das Selige Erwägen by Telemann. Beyond a simple musical setting of the Passion narrative of Christ, as in Bach, one hears in this score a succession of meditations. While its genesis is not well known, it is known that the success of this work was considerable, even more so than that of the Passion according to Brockes or the oratorio La Mort de Jésus. The clarity of diction and the transparency of the voices in the chorales do justice to the dramatic expression typical of these sacred works. From the theatrical art of the nascent opera, Telemann draws inspiration to entrust the orchestra with the task of highlighting, through refined instrumentation, the emotion, sometimes dolorous, conveyed by the text. The sound of the chalumeaux, ancestors of the clarinet, enriches the sound texture and contributes to the diversity of characters that reflects the imagination of the composer. The superb baroque ensemble on ancient instruments from Freiburg resonates, in this tragic framework, with the consoling and illuminating humanity of Telemann.
