The guitar-bass duo Gong Gong Gong emerged from the underground scene of Beijing in 2015 with a distinct vision and an uncompromising sense of purpose. It consists of Tom Ng, born in Hong Kong, and Joshua Frank, a Montrealer who lived in Hong Kong during his childhood. The band unites musical cultures, drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as Bo Diddley, Cantonese opera, West African desert blues, drone, and electronic music. On their debut album, Phantom Rhythm, originally released in 2019, the locomotive sound of Tom Ng's guitar combines with Joshua Frank's striking, harmonically rich bass lines to evoke an aura of ghostly snares and timbales. Over Frank's enigmatic melodies, Ng sings in Cantonese, weaving abstract narratives about absurdity, doubt, desire, and lust. Synced to near-telepathy, the band uses its minimalist tools and idiosyncratic playing style to challenge notions of rock 'n' roll and reduce the form to its bare essentials: rhythm, melody, and texture.
