Surf Masada - Tribute To John Zorn

Description

Golems of the Red Planet is a blend of seasoned musicians, iconoclasts, and merry saboteurs, drawing inspiration from the outer reaches of art rock, jazz, surf, and the unclassifiable. Guitarist Harvey Gold, a founding member of the legendary Akron band Tin Huey, brings decades of boundary-pushing experience with Half Cleveland, Sally Spring, The HiFis, and his solo album "It's Messy Vol. 1". Bassist Mark Allender, a true Zorn enthusiast, comes from The Pointless Orchestra and a series of original solo albums. Drummer Bob Ethington has played in groups as diverse as Unit 5, Glenn Lazear, and The Robert Ethington Quintet. Cellist Matt Reese brings a unique melodic touch, born from his experience with Trial of Lucy and Flying Carpet People. Together, they form a band whose collective journey resembles less a résumé than a map of creative resistance. The Golems of the Red Planet were born from the creative ferment of musicians with radically different horizons, drawn to John Zorn's Masada: compact compositions of fierce elegance, designed to be reinvented by other artists. The Golems' twist? Using surf music as a springboard, not a destination, filtering those Ashkenazi Jewish folk sounds through reverb, propulsion, and a delightfully off-kilter sense of possibility. "Starting point" is the key phrase: while Surf Masada sometimes ventures unbridled into the genre's pleasures, the group's true instinct is insidious expansion. Eclectic to their fingertips, the Golems treat surf as a language they master perfectly—without ever blindly submitting to it—reinventing it with spirit, energy, and a lifetime of beautiful, quirky ideas.
