The minimalist and breakbeat trio GoGo Penguin is back with their brand new album "Everything Is Going to Be OK". With a new drummer, a new label (XXIM Records, Sony Records' electronic and classical imprint), and a subtly evolving and polished sound, the band ushers in a more ambient era.
"Everything Is Going to Be OK" was born from a period of turbulence and loss. During a time of oppressive grief, the studio offered the band a sanctuary from real life. The resulting project draws its strength from shared understanding and empathy. Life has many positives, and despite difficult times, we should be more mindful of celebrating the strong moments, without restraint. Through our trials, we will emerge stronger - everything is going to be okay.
GoGo Penguin is a trio from Manchester, UK, consisting of Chris Illingworth (piano), Nick Blacka (double bass), and Jon Scott (drums). Formed in 2012, their second album v2.0 was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2014, and in 2016, the trio signed with Blue Note Records, releasing a trio of critically acclaimed and publicly successful albums: 'Man Made Object', 'A Humdrum Star', and 'GoGo Penguin', as well as two EPs and a remix album 'GGP/RMX'. They were Blue Note's best-selling contemporary instrumental artists and have sold over 300,000 albums.
The band composes and performs as a unit, and the band members describe their music as "acoustic-electronica". Their largely (but not exclusively) acoustic music draws on breakbeats, classical influences, jazz, minimalist piano melodies, powerful basslines, and electronic-inspired drumming and anthemic riffs.
When describing GoGo Penguin's music, critics often refer to Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Massive Attack, Brian Eno, and classical composers Shostakovich and Debussy, or contemporary minimalist composers such as Philip Glass.
GoGo Penguin has toured extensively internationally, performing at international festivals such as Coachella, Outside Lands, Fuji Rock, Blue Dot, Montreal Jazz Festival, Vienna, Pukkelpop, North Sea Jazz, and many others, and has sold out venues worldwide, from the Royal Albert Hall to La Cigale, Paradiso, and Bowery Ballroom.
