Brian J. Gitkin returns to Wonderwheel Recordings with Golden Age, an album of ten songs that showcases the latest evolution of a guitar-driven sound. Exploring the infinite expanses of cumbia, North African music, and Middle Eastern influences, the guitarist has infused his own personality into these traditions, creating a vibrant interaction between distant modes and rhythms and his own sound steeped in New Orleans culture. While Brian J is an accomplished vocalist and musician (Cedric Burnside, Corey Henry, Pimps Of Joytime, etc.), the Gitkin project has always been a space to dive into instrumental atmospheres and melodies without lyrics, and this new creation has elevated that local yet far-reaching sound to its highest level. Golden Age is undeniably a product of New Orleans. Each of the ten compositions exudes a swampy and subtropical atmosphere, that’s for sure. But there is also a rhythmic and percussive dynamism characteristic of the best music from New Orleans, whether it’s the funk of the Meters or the hoodoo vibes of Dr. John, both of which find a faint echo in Gitkin's music.
