Canzone à Basso : Musique du XVIIème siècle pour basse de violon

Description

This album by the baroque ensemble Mvsica Perdvta brings together Renato Criscuolo (bass viol) and Alberto Bagnai (organ and harpsichord) in performances of works by Girolamo Frescobaldi, Padre Bartolomé de Selma y Salaverde, and other composers. The recording was made in Pizzoferrato (Chieti, Italy), in the church of Santa Maria del Girone (11th century), using historical instruments. Although the bass viol was among the most widely used instruments for basso continuo between 1628 — the year of the first edition of Girolamo Frescobaldi’s Primo libro delle canzoni — and 1638 — the year of publication of the Canzoni, fantasie et correnti da suonar a 1, 2, 3, 4 voci con Basso Continuo by the Augustinian friar Bartolomeo de Selma y Salaverde —, it is today very rarely used (and often in a philologically rather unrigorous way!) within early music ensembles; for repertoires from the early 17th century, these ensembles favor the viola da gamba (an instrument that, as a rule, did not have a continuo role) or the baroque cello (an instrument that had not yet been invented!).
