Ida lupino

Description

Ida Lupino is a fresh and inspired album, standing out for its deep and rich music, brimming with subtle details. The core of the album is forged by the improvisational relationship maintained by pianist Giovanni Guidi and trombonist Gianluca Petrella, which they developed notably within Enrico Rava's group, but also through their travels, meeting other improvisers. Their music is enriched by the encounter with American drummer Gerald Cleaver, a regular musician of ECM since 1997, and French clarinetist Louis Sclavis, to whom the German label owes 10 albums as a leader, initiated by Manfred Eicher. The majority of the album's tracks thus result from improvisations, in very free music, at times introspective and extroverted, with the foundation laid by Guidi's piano. However, the eponymous track Ida Lupino is a work written by Carla Bley, who directed Petrella within a big band, and a tribute to Paul Bley, who inspired many improvisers, particularly Guidi. Another written piece, Per i morti di Reggio Emilia (For the death of Reggio Emilia), is a protest song by Turin folk singer Fausto Amodei. The album, produced by Manfred Eicher, was recorded in three days at the Stelio Molo RSI auditorium in Lugano, in the purest tradition of the ECM label.
