Rainbow Music, the new album by lo-fi musician Sam Hall aka ghost orchard, is a collage of patience and meditation. While bunny (2019), critically acclaimed, was a love letter to a romantic relationship, Rainbow Music documents the culmination of his first experience with grief, in various forms. At the end of 2020, his lifelong pet passed away, taking with it the last ties between childhood and adulthood. Still settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he grew up, the ease of familiar life seems to crumble, as his friends move to larger cities, his relationships change, and in a short time, another pet he had adopted dies prematurely, leaving Hall questioning the path he is embarking on himself. The title "rainbow music" refers to the myriad of colors and qualities that refract within Hall. It is a symbol of hope and continuation, the flickering light at the end of the tunnel. This collection of songs ultimately sees him at peace with the current state of things. The release of rainbow music is a happy ending in itself, a marker of survival that remains true to his state of mind.
