This music could be the score for a romantic drama, an action thriller, or a modern take on a classic film noir. The stripped-down, cascading vocals accentuate the lush instrumental orchestrations composed, performed, arranged, and produced by multi-instrumentalist Seth Applebaum. Evoking the groove of an era that predates his arrival on earth, Seth draws inspiration from the sound devices of mid-century exotica and the succinct yet dense arrangement style of 60s and early 70s chart pop. He blends impressions of this bygone era with the expression of his real-life experiences as a young filmmaker coming of age in the 21st century, citing influences such as Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and Antibalas. In the tradition of producers such as David Axelrod and the Mizell brothers, it’s easy to imagine him as a "mad scientist", locked away in a studio, channeling this musical representation of his inner world into the 12 compositions that make up A New Kind of Love. His writing explores his psyche to explore a terrain on which he captures the emotional notes of love that goes well and love that goes wrong. While the studio is clearly a wonderful place for experimentation and creativity for him, he is no less a band man (he was the leader of the punk band The Mad Doctors). Seth Applebaum brings his dreamy touch to the Ghost Funk Orchestra, a 10-piece band, and allows them to bring to life this sophisticated ensemble that heralds the beginning of a new era for the band. It’s an album that will surely stand the test of time.
