This selection by Jean-Baptiste Mersiol and booklet by Stéphanie Acquette brings together the historical recordings of the significant scenes from the romantic drama Ruy Blas and some poems by the prolific Victor Hugo, recited by some of the greatest French actors of the 20th century between 1958 and 1962. The performances by Paul-Émile Deiber, in his first major dramatic role, Pierre Dux, or Jean Meyer, offer a window into the soul of French theater of that time. A unique testimony to the art of declamation specific to the lyricism of this period, this box set honors the one who, according to André Gide, was "alas!" the greatest French poet he has, even today, never ceased to be.
