As a member of Pineapple Thief, Porcupine Tree, and King Crimson at one time or another, as well as a guest on many acclaimed recordings, he has earned a reputation as one of the most exciting drummers around. In 1997, Gavin released "Sanity & Gravity," an impressive and ego-free debut solo album, featuring performances from an exceptional group including Mick Karn, Richard Barbieri, Jakko Jakszyk (21st Century Schizoid Band), and Dave Stewart (Egg, National Health). Avoiding making a typical "solo" drum album to showcase his prodigious technique, Gavin created an expressive and emotional album, strong in groove and melody. In his own words, "faced with the prospect of making a solo drum album, I decided to take a more experimental approach to my instrument, rather than making a record of solos and fast rhythms to try to show my technique. I felt there was a way to express emotion from the drums played with the attitude of 'blowing' on a saxophone. The original album has gained legendary status over the 25 years since its initial conception, with the CD reaching high prices on the resale market.
