Double Grammy Award winner, alto saxophonist Gary Bartz (born in Baltimore on September 26, 1940) studied music at the Juilliard School in New York. He then worked with many renowned musicians such as Max Roach, Art Blakey, Blue Mitchell, and McCoy Tyner in the 1960s. His international fame came when he joined Miles Davis in the early 1970s. He first recorded for SteepleChase with Jackie McLean in 1973 ("Ode To Super" SCCD 31009). Fifteen years later, he joined a studio in Copenhagen with the group he was touring with in Europe (except for Butch Lacy who replaced Joanne Brackeen on piano) to record this second album for SteepleChase. Bartz received the BNY Mellon Jazz 2015 Living Legacy Award. He is a jazz saxophone professor at Oberlin College. "...one of Bartz's best recent albums. While showcasing the leader's powerful playing, the well-balanced ensemble performances are quite captivating." (Sato – Swing Journal, Japan, on SCS 1234)
