Gaëtan Roussel, legendary voice of the contemporary French scene, returns on March 19 with “Est-ce que tu sais ?”, a powerful and fascinating acoustic album of 11 tracks, between pop hits and timeless songs. It includes the single “On ne meurt pas (en une seule fois)” as well as two duets with Camélia Jordana and Alain Souchon. “Souchon is fantastic, he’s someone I’ve always followed. I was very happy that he agreed to come and do a song with me. Camélia, I had the chance to meet her about ten years ago for a Blondie cover. She has a fantastic and solid voice,” he explains. Far from wanting to take the easy way out and write about lockdown, Gaëtan Roussel nevertheless could not shake the little certainty that remains for his audience. His hit “Tu ne savais pas” says it well. Passionate about sport for as long as he can remember, the former voice of Louise Attaque managed to set his childhood idols to music. Alain Prost, Jean-Pierre Rives, Marie-Jo Perec, Christine Aaron, Martin Fourcade, Bernard Hinault and Bixente Lizarazu sing along on the chorus of “On ne meurt pas (en une seule fois).” Already announced several times on social media, the album should mark a true return to his roots for the artist. “For this new album, I focused on my guitar and me,” he also said on Virgin Radio. The album opens with “Tu ne savais pas”, an epic track that grows denser with every second. There is not really a chorus on this song, but a leitmotif that stays with you until the very last note and makes us question certainties. A kind of contemporary musical western. “Je me jette à ton cou” takes over and gently leads us by the hand, as simply as the “Rousselian” melodies he has accustomed us to. Then come “Est ce que tu sais ?” and “La photo”, a spellbinding track where we are lucky enough to hear Camélia Jordana’s crystalline voice alongside Gaëtan Roussel’s. “On ne meurt pas (en une seule fois)” sets the pace and makes us dance endlessly, while “La Colère” reveals itself with restraint. This key track on the album competes for first place with another emblematic song, “Les matins difficiles”, a lyric that speaks to each and every one of us. On “Sans sommeil”, Monsieur Souchon joins in, to Gaëtan Roussel’s great delight. A long-held dream, fulfilled so simply, for a track of disarming naturalness. “Tout contre toi” is not unlike “Dis-moi encore que tu m’aimes”, a little Roussel gem. “Tour du monde” takes us on a journey through an engaging world, with the distinctive feature of Gaëtan Roussel’s very low voice, whispering his wishes and desires.
