After a first EP released at the end of 2021, listened to over 2 million times on streaming platforms, and a remarkable opening act for Jamie Cullum on two dates at the Salle Pleyel, the very talented Gabi Hartmann unveils a magnificent eponymous debut album blending Chanson, Jazz, and Folk, where her 'beautiful' voice works wonders.
Accompanied by songwriter and producer Jesse Harris (Norah Jones, Melody Gardot, Madeleine Peyroux…), the young woman seems to have already lived several lives to imbue her music with so many nuances and colors, perfectly blended into such a personal vocal timbre and songs of already superior quality.
When Jesse Harris offered to produce her album, she saw it as an invitation to "bring together everything I am," she says – her love for Billie Holiday and Billie Eilish, her friendships with Sudanese flutist Ghandi Adam and Guinean guitarist Abdoulaye Kouyaté, her admiration for the great crooner Henri Salvador, and her memories of travels in Africa.
Constantly evolving, Gabi offers songs in English, such as her second single Buzzing Bee, I'll Tell You Something, and Baby; in Portuguese (Coração Transparente); and, of course, in French, notably the magnificent Une errante sur la terre, L’amour incompris, and her first single Mille Rivages, resulting in a remarkable and striking work that highlights her talent and unique voice.
It must be said that the singer and guitarist has given herself the means to embrace music in a path that belongs only to her, bestowing the beauties of the world she comprehends with her emotions as her only compass. Brazil, South Africa, Guinea, Portugal, the United States, Paris where she grew up, London where she studied ethnomusicology: her travels and encounters have given her art a kind of self-evidence. An evidence mixed with curiosity, expressed in three languages – French, English, Portuguese – which she has chosen to fully express herself in, with sincere and captivating abandon, through which jazz, blues, bossa, soul, and chanson are embodied in intensely lived experience.
Gabi Hartmann, a young artist of incredible talent who is very likely to quickly make a name for herself!
