Future Islands is a Baltimore-based trio comprising Gerrit Welmers (keyboards and programming), William Cashion (bass, guitar), and Samuel T. Herring (vocals), who have been distilling a synthesis of pop, rock, and new wave since 2006. After three albums released on various labels, the band has just signed with 4AD for their latest album, Singles.
The album contains all the ingredients that made the band famous: their renowned hybrid sound, a strange cross between post-punk and new wave, supported by synth layers and the husky voice of their singer, Samuel T. Herring, somewhere between Tom Waits and Joe Cocker.
The trio invents the perfect formula for a dancefloor elegy infused with 80s influences, at once pop, electro, and pop-rock, as evidenced by excellent tracks like "Seasons (Waiting On You)" and "Sun In The Morning." The ten tracks that make up this new album were produced by Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Grizzly Bear).
