Wewantsounds announces the very first release of the legendary concert by Freddie Hubbard and his quintet recorded in Paris at the Maison de la Radio (ORTF) on March 25, 1973. Hubbard is accompanied by George Cables on Fender Rhodes, Junior Cook on saxophone/flute, Kent Brinkley on bass, and Michael Carvin on drums. The group performs four classic Hubbard pieces in a spiritual mode. After playing for legends such as Ornette Coleman, Quincy Jones, Art Blakey, and John Coltrane, he signed with CTI in 1970, a prominent jazz label of the time. Freddie Hubbard recorded five successful studio albums there, further solidifying his reputation as a jazz superstar. At the beginning of 1973, after recording with the cream of CTI (Ron Carter, Jack Dejohnette, George Benson, Herbie Hancock, etc.), the trumpeter decided to form a new quintet consisting of Junior Cook and Kent Brinkley, along with two young talents from the thriving post-bop scene: pianist George Cables - who honed his skills with Woody Shaw and Joe Henderson - and drummer Michael Carvin, who had played with Doug Carn and Henry Franklin. The quintet was set to record Keep Your Soul Together for CTI in October '73, but at the start of the year, the musicians were honing the group with a European tour that brought them to Paris at the Maison de la Radio on March 25. The music they played that evening is bright, organic, and inspired - and very different from the CTI sound. The musicians perform four standards by the trumpeter: "Sky Dive," "The Intrepid Fox," "Povo," and "First Light": the music retains the essence of the four beautiful melodies and stretches them with long solos enriched by George Cables' Fender Rhodes and Michael Carvin's powerful drumming. The concert, which was also filmed for French television, has become cult over the years and is one of the most inspired performances by the jazzman during a key yet underdocumented period. Wewantsounds is pleased to pay a vibrant tribute to Freddie Hubbard with the official release of this now-legendary concert. The concert tapes have been transferred to the INA studios and remastered by Colorsound Studio.
