Waxwork Records is thrilled to release the PHANTASM Original Motion Picture Score by Fred Myrow and Malcolm Seagrave. To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the iconic horror film, this special triple LP includes for the first time the complete score from the original 1979 recordings, across all formats, a full LP of previously unreleased tracks from the Phantasm score recording sessions, and the newly remastered original 1979 score album. Directed by Don Coscarelli, Phantasm has become a horror classic due to its surreal and unconventional storytelling. Filming over a weekend for a year and working with a budget of only $300,000, Coscarelli and his team created a bizarre, gory, and entirely original horror film. Some of the film's most famous aspects, like the floating silver orb, come directly from Coscarelli's dreams, giving the film an even more ethereal feel. Composers Fred Myrow and Malcolm Seagrave drew inspiration from the horror music of Goblin (Suspiria) and Mike Oldfield (The Exorcist) to create the haunting sounds of Phantasm. Myrow and Seagrave were working with synthesizers in the early days of the instrument. Coscarelli explains: "The synthesizers we were using at the time were so primitive that you couldn't repeat something; you programmed the synthesizer, meaning you adjusted all these knobs to create a sound, and then you would go back and try to retrieve it and forget it - it was impossible." "I recently received a notice informing me that our long-term film storage vault, located in the basement of the historic Howard Hughes headquarters building at the corner of Romaine and Sycamore in Hollywood, was permanently closed. During the process of retrieving our negatives, I came across the three original reels of the Ampex 456 analog tape used in the recording sessions for the Phantasm score. Listening to the score now, including the output tracks, I am impressed by the inventiveness and boldness of Fred and Malcolm in their approach to the music of Phantasm. Waxwork Records is excited to release the original music of the PHANTASM Motion Picture Score by Fred Myrow and Malcolm Seagrave in the form of a deluxe 3xLP featuring the extended and complete score from the original 1979 recordings, previously unreleased tracks from the Phantasm recording sessions, and the newly remastered 1979 original music album.
