Led by the sparkling team of Chris Collingwood and the late great Adam Schlesinger, the power pop maestros Fountains of Wayne released a number of absolutely brilliant albums, two of which we have been fortunate enough to reissue so far, Welcome Interstate Managers and Traffic and Weather. But of all the great records released by this New York-based band, this one, the 2005 2-CD box set Out-of-State Plates, would have remained among Schlesinger's favorites, who tragically passed away from COVID in 2020. A mix of demos, B-sides, live performances, and unreleased tracks (the standout "Maureen" and "The Girl I Can't Forget"), it's an always entertaining, often hilarious, and (of course!) never less than melodic journey through about a decade of recordings, all humorously annotated by Collingwood and Schlesinger. Sincere yet ironic covers ("These Days" by Jackson Browne and "Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears) and Christmas treats ("I Want an Alien for Christmas," "Hanukkah Under the Stars") sit alongside B-side gems like "Baby I've Changed" and "I'll Do the Driving" and a live version of "She's Got a Problem." For its vinyl debut, we created a gatefold jacket with the duo's commentary inside and pressed this 2 LP set in "Junkyard Swirl" vinyl to match the cover art.
