Imaginary Cycle

Description

Initially scheduled for release on 8/11 A fundamentally singular project of vast ambition and perfectly unique in its setup, "Imaginary Cycle", conceived by Florian Weber for an atypical instrumentation featuring his piano in dialogue with a brass ensemble, is a hybrid work blending various musical languages in a way that is both harmonious and oblique. In this piece, composed of four parts plus an overture and an epilogue, the German pianist is accompanied by a group of four euphoniums, a trombone quartet, flutist Anna-Lena Schnabel, and Michel Godard on the "serpent" for music that blurs the lines between improvisation and composition. Guiding the ensemble through these multiple idioms with great elegance, Florian Weber alternates contrapuntal sequences and symphonic passages, pastoral atmospheres and more contemporary textures, with each voice contributing to the general discourse with great independence. As spectacular as it is audacious, "Imaginary Cycle" is another example of Florian Weber's unique talents, even though he has recently been heard on Matthieu Bordenave's and Ralph Alessi's ECM albums as well as leading his own quartet for the recording of "Lucent Waters". Recorded at Sendesaal Bremen in July 2023, the piece "Imaginary Cycle" was conceived and developed in close collaboration with Manfred Eicher, who produced the album.
