The indie-pop duo Flora Cash presents Our Generation, their third album. The beginnings of Flora Cash are nothing short of a modern love story. Shpresa Lleshaj is living in Stockholm when she stumbles upon the SoundCloud page of American Cole Randall. It all starts with public comments of mutual admiration that lead to private conversations for a year and a half. Shpresa spends an idyllic summer with Cole in Minnesota, then the couple flies to Stockholm. They have been inseparable ever since. Our Generation is a record for anyone who knows what it means to pursue a dream even when the world denies it. Shpresa is just a little girl when her family escapes the conflict in Kosovo, traveling across Europe, sometimes walking at night for hours through fields to reach what felt like a Promised Land. It is in a small town in southern Sweden that she discovers her passion for singing and songwriting. Cole's parents were themselves children at his birth, just out of high school in a small town in northern Minnesota. He is just a little boy when his father is sent to prison for drug trafficking. Throughout his childhood, Cole's single mother attends university. His grandparents step in as additional parents, and his grandfather becomes his father figure. Young Cole then experiments with his multitrack recorder and discovers a passion for writing and recording songs. The unlikely intersection of these two distant paths leads to a series of impressive successes, including several gold and platinum certifications in the United States, Australia, Sweden, Germany, Norway, and the United Kingdom. But Flora Cash is above all a love story, an adventure, and a reminder to those who were not born rich or whose childhoods were fraught with challenges that our most overwhelming limitations are the ones we impose on ourselves. Our Generation is rooted in the promise that each generation makes to the next that great things are possible. It is a message by and for a generation of children who know what it means to be a refugee, to grow up with a father in prison, to struggle with mental health, to seek adventure and self-fulfillment, and to meet their soulmate.
