The recording was originally streamed live on the winter solstice of 2020, just days after New York declared a state of emergency and tightened restrictions again in response to the rise in COVID-19 cases. Pecknold describes the set as "me all alone during the longest night of the year... honoring the solitude of 2020 with a nylon string and a few new and old songs."
