Under the name Fiver, singer-songwriter, researcher, and guitarist Simone Schmidt continues to innovate within the traditions of country and folk music with humor and depth. "Cleaning House" arrives after a period of mourning, marked by the loss of friends, landmarks, and metaphors. The singer had nearly given up on writing. But after consulting a medium who revealed a ritual to cleanse her apartment of stagnant energies, Schmidt applied the same process to "Cleaning House." Suddenly, the haunting melodies and unfinished phrases that lingered in her mind cleared, deep, long-buried feelings found their expression, and dull tunes were revitalized by new musicians. Thus was born Fiver Three: drummer Nate Doucet, bassist Jeremy Costello, and steel guitarist Dani Crowther, who blend precise pieces with vast improvised passages, all performed with dynamic energy and palpable affection. Fiver's lyrics refuse slogans but remain engaged, deploying wit and poetry to untangle the web of our human condition under late capitalism. The album "Cleaning House" enriches Fiver's impressive discography, praised by critics for its warmth and rigor. Their musical journey spans collaborations with the traditional music group Lonesome Ace String Band on the album "Audible Songs From Rockwood" (2017) to the free music improvisers of Fiver with the Atlantic School of Spontaneous Composition (named best album of 2021 by the Guardian UK). Though they elude the logic of the commercial music industry, their influence is undeniable. Their songs are widely covered, notably by U.S. Girls and Stripmall Ballads. More recently, their collaboration with Destroyer, the track "Bologna," was ranked among the 100 best songs of 2025 by Pitchfork.
