Field Commander Ali is the solo project of Ali Mollica, a folk artist based on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia. *The Next From Field Commander*, her new album and the second under this name, was recorded in her bedroom in Stanwell Park, a coastal town surrounded by bushland, where the Great Dividing Range meets the Tasman Sea. Mollica worked quickly on it in early 2025, armed almost exclusively with a classical guitar and a 4-track recorder. The result is a deeply captivating Australian folk album. Her voice, a subtle balance of contained vulnerability and determined stoicism, describes everyday scenes, fleeting interactions, and suspended moments between people, with striking clarity of expression. The songs exude a unique density despite their apparent simplicity, enriched by layered vocals, resonant silences, and discreet domestic sounds. In the vein of figures like Bridget St John or Anne Briggs, while remaining resolutely personal, Mollica brings forth a new voice, intimate and assured, always reaching out to the world and the desire to understand.
