Fiddlehead's third album, Death is Nothing to Us, marks a new chapter for the band. Since 2014, the Boston group has been honing its unique sound, blending the energy of hardcore, the anthemic melodies of 90s alternative, and the unbridled passion of emo from the Revolution Summer era. Their previous albums, Springtime and Blind in 2018 and Between The Richness in 2021, explored grief from different perspectives, and their new album feels like a culmination, weaving together many recurring themes from their discography, both sonically and lyrically. The band once again teamed up with producer Chris Teti (Anxious, TWIABP&IANLATD) for their third album, and his impactful production captures Fiddlehead's live energy while highlighting the massive guitars and undeniable hooks that make their music so satisfying. Singer Pat Flynn, since his time as the frontman of Have Heart, has earned a reputation as one of hardcore's most thoughtful lyricists. He intertwines his musings on life, death, and all the joys and tragedies in between with references to the Roman philosopher Lucretius, author Jean Améry, and other musicians like Bad Brains, Alex G, or Wire. Death is Nothing to Us exemplifies what makes Fiddlehead a special band: tackling difficult and unanswered questions in a very down-to-earth manner, all wrapped in the urgent power of a three-minute punk song.
