Enrique Rodríguez and the Negra Chiway Band have a unique sound reminiscent of the ensembles of Sun Ra and Horace Tapscott, a sound supported by energetic and percussive Latin rhythms. This is complemented by elements from the soundtrack of Akira Kurosawa's film "Samurai," the musical spirituality of Popol Vuh, Tibetan Buddhism, and powerful chants. This sound, due to its South American setting, gives the band a truly unique color: hypnotic piano riffs, powerful brass and flutes, an army of Latin percussion instruments, and addictive vocal chants that combine into a powerful blend of 60s Afro-centered jazz, Eastern spirituality and cosmology, and Latin American rhythmic movement.
