Fanny is an American rock and hard rock band. It is one of the notable rock groups of the early 1970s, entirely female, the third to sign with a major label (after Goldie and the Gingerbreads and The Pleasure Seekers), and the first to release an album on a major label in 1970. The band has two singles that reached the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and five albums. Founded by sisters Jean (bass) and June Millington (guitar) in 1969, Fanny also includes drummer Alice de Buhr (replacing Brie Brandt) and keyboardist Nickey Barclay. The band secured a contract with Reprise Records, a subsidiary of Warner, thanks to producer Richard Perry, who oversaw the recording of their first three albums, Fanny (1970), Charity Ball (1971), and Fanny Hill (1972). The second album is the best-selling; the title track, Charity Ball, reached number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. Shortly after the release of their first album, Barclay temporarily left the band to play with Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs, but he advised her to return to Fanny. The band toured internationally, opening for Slade, Jethro Tull, and Humble Pie: a 1971 article in Sounds magazine notes that the band "seems to have opened for everyone." The members of Fanny also worked as session musicians, notably on Barbra Streisand's album Barbra Joan Streisand (1971). Their fourth album, Mother's Pride (1973), was produced by Todd Rundgren. A fifth and final record, Rock and Roll Survival, was released with a different lineup: June Millington and Alice de Buhr having left Fanny, they were replaced by Patti Quatro (Suzi Quatro's sister) and Brie Brandt. It was mixed by Leslie Ann Jones. The single Butter Boy reached number 29 in sales in early 1975, but the band disbanded. This box set includes the first 4 albums released between 1970 and 1973.
