At Real Gone Music, we have had the privilege and pride of releasing Fanny's four classic albums, each one a melodic testament to why they were the first all-female band signed to a major label. But there has always been a missing piece to the Fanny story; for while the band worked with renowned producers and engineers like Richard Perry, Todd Rundgren, and Geoff Emerick, their studio albums never quite managed to capture the pure excitement they could generate live. However, buried in a vault thousands of miles from their Los Angeles base, there was long ago a recording that could make the Fanny myth a reality, a recording that could provide the definitive answer to why these four ladies were the hottest tickets on the Sunset Strip in the early '70s. Today, more than 50 years later, its time – and their time – has come. Live on Beat-Club '71-'72 features the two sets that Fanny recorded for the German television show, mastered by Mike Milchner of Sonic Vision from high-resolution mono files taken from the original video cassette. Aside from the incendiary and incredibly tight performances, what becomes immediately evident is that these four women were powerhouse performers. The magic of June Millington, the melodic and catchy bass lines of her sister Jean, the Janis Joplin-like vocals, the complex yet somewhat rock-oriented keyboard work of Nickey Barclay, and the precise, piston-like drumming punctuated by fierce fills, Fanny together was an overwhelming display of talent, but somehow, as these shows reveal, live, they were greater than the sum of their parts. That’s why the release of these recordings has long been a crusade for Alice, and why June tells the story in the accompanying liner notes (which feature contributions from June, Jean, and Alice) that the engineer assigned to transfer all the Beat-Club material told her that their material was the best in the vault, even better than Hendrix.
