Behind the pseudonym Ex:Re (pronounced ex ray) is Elena Tonra, better known as the guitarist, singer, and lyricist of the band Daughter. This is her first solo project, a deeply personal album recorded with such urgency and visceral need that its digital release happened last November.
Ex:Re is a breakup album: melancholic songs written like unsent letters, to herself or to others. While her writing spanned a year, the recording was completed in a few weeks with the help of Fabian Prynn (4AD's in-house sound engineer and producer) and cellist Josephine Stephenson. Under the pseudonym Ex:Re, Elena wanted to reference her ex-partner, as in an email 'regarding:ex', and X-rays, as a way of examining her inner self.
