EWAN MACCOLL became known at the age of 15 as an activist, at 16 he formed his own theater troupe and at 17 he was already on the MI5 watchlist. This songwriter and activist established himself as a leading figure of the English folk revival by the age of 35. He is best known for having written some songs that are now classics of folk: including The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face, Dirty Old Town, The Shoals Of Herring, and The Joy of Living (all featured on this tribute album). This tribute is released on the occasion of the centenary of EWAN MACCOLL's birth and includes his greatest classics reinterpreted by: Damien Dempsey, Martin Carthy, The Unthanks, Seth Lakeman, Marry Waterson, Dick Gaughan, Billy Bragg, Chaim Tannenbaum, Steve Earle, Eliza Carthy, Jarvis Cocker, Paul Buchanan, Paul Brady, Norma Waterson, Martin Simpson, Christy Moore, Karine Polwart, Kathryn Williams, Jack Steadman & Jamie MacColl (Bombay Bicycle Club), Rufus & Martha Wainwright, and David Gray. This tribute album was conceived under the artistic direction of his sons Neill and Calum Maccoll, both of whom are musicians.
