In 2006, the Japanese band Envy definitively blurred the boundaries between different sub-genres of underground rock with Insomniac Doze, blending post-hardcore, screamo, shoegaze, and ambient minimalism into a contemplative album. This was not a destination without a path: the band’s two previous albums, "All the Footprints You’ve Left Behind and the Fear Expecting Ahead" (2001) and "A Dead Sinking Story" (2003), clearly signaled that a change was on the horizon. As always, Envy was driven by creative curiosity and emotional exploration. Perhaps no album in their nearly four-decade history illustrates this quest better than Insomniac Doze. Twenty years later, it stands as a pioneer and one of the earliest examples of the dissolution of preconceived ideas about punk. Remastered in 2026 by Josh Bonati, the new deluxe gatefold edition of the album includes complete lyrics in English and Japanese. This is the definitive version of an album that helped define a genre.
