Enrique Rodríguez and the Negra Chiway Band have a unique sound reminiscent of the ensembles of Sun Ra and Horace Tapscott, a sound underpinned by an energetic and percussive Latin rhythm section. Added to this are elements from Akira Kurosawa's "Samurai" film score, the musical spirituality of Popol Vuh, Tibetan Buddhism, and powerful chants. This sound, due to its South American setting, gives the group a truly unique color: hypnotic piano riffs, powerful brass and flutes, an army of Latin percussion instruments, and addictive vocal chants that combine in a powerful mix of 60s Afro-centric jazz, Eastern spirituality and cosmology, and Latin American rhythmic movement. Brilliant!
