Dissever, the sixth album by Emptyset, extends their exploration of the roots and mutations of electronic music throughout the 20th century. The duo weaves a dialogue between cosmic rock, minimalism, and pioneering electronic sounds, drawing inspiration from the experimental practices of the late 1960s. The album questions the parallel evolution of these currents and their futuristic visions, blending mystical, hypnotic, and technological elements.Recorded in single takes at Mat Sampson's studio in Bristol, Dissever revisits vintage analog techniques and spatial and multitrack recording devices. The result is a dense and immersive work that brings together past and present in a reinvented temporality, like a sonic transmission spanning from 1969 to today.Presented as a live performance at Tate Modern as part of the Electric Dreams exhibition on the global history of art and technology, the album highlights the improvisational and performative dimension of the project. Dissever is also rooted in the duo's individual research: James Ginzburg through his work with the transnational group Osmium, and Paul Purgas through his investigations into the sound archives of South Asia.
