Description

Chad R. Matheny, known under the pseudonym Emperor X, has been producing eccentric underground pop music with dense lyrics since 1998. With a background in physics, philosophy, and musical composition, he left the academic world to travel the globe for twenty years, performing in varied venues such as symphony halls in Portugal, fair domes in Lebanon, or metal bars in Ukraine. Alone on stage with guitar and synthesizer, he regularly shares the bill with artists like Ratboys, The Hotelier, Foxing, or Xiu Xiu. Alongside his solo career, Matheny is an active producer, having worked on the album Well I Mean by Brian Sella as well as the record Bits by Oxford Collapse for the Sub Pop label, alongside Eric Topalski. His talent also extends to composing soundtracks for non-profit organizations such as Planned Parenthood and the SEIU. His ambient work, Keeling Curve, was also integrated in 2011 and 2012 into a multimedia installation by photographer Joel Sternfeld, presented during a retrospective at the Museum Folkwang. A nomadic and versatile artist, he continues to mark the independent scene with his singular approach and prestigious collaborations, blending scientific rigor and overflowing creativity in a career that defies traditional geographical and musical conventions.
