Description

With Cyano, Emily A. Sprague builds an intricate world, expanding a sound palette that is both familiar and viscerally new. The album is born from an imaginary planet where the inhabitants reconstruct forbidden capacities of expressiveness and emotional connection, a narrative thread inspired by the cyanotypes of Anna Atkins, a 19th-century botanist and photographer who documented flowers through the cyanotype process. Originally from upstate New York, Sprague first gained recognition through her indie band Florist in the early 2010s, before turning to experimental and ambient composition under her own name in 2017. Her solo releases include Water Memory / Mount Vision, Hill, Flower, Fog, and Cloud Time, all on RVNG. On Cyano, experimental and formless music deconstructs the more traditional songwriting of Florist. Spontaneous patchings and sounds from her early modular experiments in 2016 evoke past eras and inner worlds. All sounds are synthesized, with no samples or acoustic instruments, and the album introduces singing into her previously instrumental practice for the first time. Created during a winter solstice trip in an Icelandic fjord with her partner and collaborator V Haddad, the album was finalized in just one month. Cyano will be released on October 2, 2026, on RVNG Intl.
