Embryo is considered one of the major groups of modern experimental and popular composition in Europe. Founded in Munich in 1969 around jazz vibraphonist Christian Burchard and drummer Dieter Serfas, the collective has seen over 300 musicians pass through its history. Members of groups like Amon Düül II, Xhol, or Between, as well as renowned jazz musicians such as Charlie Mariano and Mal Waldron, have participated. This diversity has made Embryo a constantly evolving ensemble, always innovative. Their first album, Opal, released in 1970 on the Ohr label, marks the beginning of this adventure. It offers inventive progressive jazz rock, blending free improvisation and a psychedelic atmosphere inherited from the late 1960s. The group was known for its extraordinary creativity and atypical musical approach. Charlie Mariano even reported that Miles Davis admired Embryo, describing its members as "crazy and creative musicians playing really strange music." Upon its release, Opal was a true artistic shock and already announced the originality that would characterize the entire career of the group.
