Elizabeth Ziman is the singer-songwriter and creative force behind Elizabeth and The Catapult. "Responsible Friend" is an album that explores how we support one another. What does it mean to be a responsible friend, to be present for someone you love without trying to save them? "The first lesson I learned about helping others," Elizabeth explains, "is that I must first put on my own oxygen mask before I can help anyone else." The next lesson (and one you won't find on an airplane) was that, despite all my good intentions, I could not ease anyone's pain. I was not there to fix anyone. I simply had to accept them as they were. This philosophy permeates the entire album, with songs evoking the death of a family member, a friend suffering from long COVID, and the shared burden of a society plagued by conflict and injustice. "I realized that everyone I knew, myself included, was called to go through an immense period of mourning at an alarming pace," she explains. "Writing these songs became my way of being carried by these experiences and slowing down enough to be fully present for the people around me." Some songs from "Responsible Friend" are joyful dedications; others feel more like letters that Elizabeth hesitated to send. Overall, it is an album that invites slowing down in a world that keeps speeding up. It is a commitment to her friends, family, and herself, at a time when everyone seems to carry a burden too heavy to bear.
